This development - the militarization of police forces over a period of decades - couldn’t have been possible without the support of Democrats, including Biden, Schumer, and Obama, who feared the “soft on crime” label and thought hardening police forces would gain them votes from (white) independents and moderates. Democrats didn’t merely support and welcome legislation to fund the hiring of more officers, but also the acquisition of various types of military weaponry and tactical gear. And for what? Do criminal organizations gather in groups to pursue their crimes in the streets? Or is military weaponry needed to fight groups of predominantly peaceful citizens exercising their constitutional rights to protest against policies that favor wealthy and powerful interests while harming or ignoring the interests of the working class and poor?

Only well to do people who’ve never been poor or lived in the wrong zip code ask this question.
